The Egyptian Public Prosecution has ordered a four-day detention pending investigation of a truck driver for crashing into the motorcade of new Minister of Local Development Hisham Amna on El-Alamein Road on Tuesday.

The minister and six other people in the motorcade were injured in the crash.

The prosecution said the truck driver caused the crash due to his “recklessness, negligence and lack of caution.”

The accident took place when the driver tried to bypass the concrete barrier separating the two directions of the road, the prosecution said.

The driver admitted to attempting to bypass the concrete barrier, and the minister’s escorts confirmed that the incident took place this way, the prosecution added.

The prosecution noted that the driver was not carrying a driver's license at the time of the accident, adding that he will be tested for drugs by the Forensic Medicine Authority.

The minister was on his way to attend a Cabinet meeting in El-Alamein city in northern Egypt when the crash took place.

The ministry’s spokesman Khaled Qassem said on Wednesday that Amna has checked out of Al-Alamein Model Hospital after undergoing leg surgery.

Amna, the former governor of Beheira governorate, was sworn in as minister of local development on Sunday, replacing ex-Minister Mahmoud Shaarawi, in a major Cabinet reshuffle that included 13 ministerial portfolios.
