Hundreds of people bid farewell on Sunday to 19-year-old university student Amany El-Gazzar in a funeral in Birket El-Sabe’ city in Menoufiya. The student was reportedly shot in the back near her home in Birket El-Sabe’ on Saturday and died of her wounds after she was taken to the hospital.
The man shot Amany after her family refused his proposal to her, the prosecution said.
The prosecution examined the body of the victim, confiscated the surveillance cameras as well as the suspect’s clothes found at the crime scene, and talked to nine witnesses, according to the statement.
The prosecution also ordered the interior ministry’s General Department of Information Technology to examine the victim’s cell phone.
This is the latest in a series of similar crimes in Egypt recently, including the killing of 20-year-old student Salma Bahgat by a fellow student in Sharqiya governorate in northern Egypt last month.
The defendant, 22-year-old university student Islam Mohamed, faces charges of premeditated murder, which is punishable by the death penalty in Egypt.
In June, a 21-year-old student at Mansoura University knifed a fellow student, Nayera Ashraf, in broad daylight after she rejected his advances. In July, a criminal court issued a preliminary death penalty verdict against the perpetrator.
