Kholoud El-Said, 20, was found dead in her home on Monday in the latest in a notorious string of cases of men accused of killing women who refuse to marry them.

In an official statement, the prosecution said the defendant entered the victim's home via a balcony and suffocated her till death.

The accused killed the victim after she broke off her engagement to him due to "his obsessive jealousy, controlling behavior and his constant mistrust."

The prosecution said that the defendant confessed to killing the victim during questioning and re-enacted his crime. 

It said 17 witnesses who knew the victim testified that the victim received threats from the defendant.

Another witness told the investigators that they saw the defendant enter the victim's home through the balcony on the night the murder took place, the prosecution said.

CCTV cameras in a building across from the victim's home show the accused man sneaking in and out of her building, it added.

The prosecution said it also obtained a recording of a phone call between Khloud and one of her friends at the same moment the reported attack

In the recording, the accused man could be heard vowing to kill the victim while she pleaded for her life, the prosecution added.

In August, a 20-year-old university student Salam Bahgat was killed in broad daylight in the lobby of a building in the city of Zagazig, the capital of Sharqiya governorate in the Nile Delta, after she and her family rejected the defendant's marriage offer.

In June, a similar incident stirred public anger when a 21-year-old student at the Faculty of Arts at Mansoura University killed his colleague Nayera Ashraf also in broad daylight after she rejected his proposal.

Both defendants received death penalty verdicts by courts of first instance in the same months as their crime.
