Egyptian activist Mahienour El-Massry and human rights lawyer Khaled Ali posted photos of Eskandrani on their social media account after his release.

In October, a military cassation court reduced the prison sentence against Eskandrani, who has been in jail since he was arrested in December 2015, to seven years instead of 10.

In May 2018, an Egyptian military court sentenced Eskandrani to 10 years in prison for spreading false news and obtaining and revealing a defence secret illegally, according to a 2021 document from the northern Cairo military prosecution that was posted by Ali in October.

Eskandrani is a researcher in political sociology and an expert on terrorist groups in North Sinai.
