Egypt foils 4,300 smuggling operations at customs ports in first two months of 2023

4,300 smuggling operations were thwarted with legal action in January and February 2023, a statement quoted the head of the Egyptian Customs Authority El-Shahat Ghatori as saying on Wednesday.

Total fees and fines owed to the authority reached over EGP 3.6 billion, according to the statement.

Finance Minister Mohamed Maait reviewed a report highlighting the Customs Authority's efforts to enhance supervision at customs checkpoints, in cooperation with concerned parties, to support national security and the Egyptian economy, and to protect citizens’ health and state treasury rights.

Maait urged the customs officers to maximise their efforts to fulfil their professional and national duties while facilitating customs procedures to attract investment.

According to the report, the Central Administration for Anti-Customs Evasion issued five seizure reports on the disposal of EGP 2 billion worth of supplies for fraudulent factories and companies.

Moreover, there were 36 reports of smuggling drugs, stimulants and alcohol valued at over EGP 575 million; and 43 reports of smuggling eavesdropping devices, surveillance cameras and mobile devices valued at EGP 21.5 million.
