Ahmed Tantawy -- who announced his willingness to run for the presidency -- said in a statement on Thursday that security forces arrested a group of volunteers for his electoral campaign.
Tantawy said the Supreme State Security Prosecution ordered the detention of six volunteers in his campaign on charges he described as "recurring stereotypical accusations."
The Egyptian National Election Authority (NEA) will soon announce the registration date for candidates for the 2024 presidential election.
The election process must begin by December 2023, per the country's constitution.
So far, five people have expressed their intention to run for the upcoming elections, including Ahmed Tantawi, a former MP; Abdel-Sanad Yamama, head of the Wafd Party; Fouad Badrawi, a former MP and member of the Wafd Party's Higher Council; Hazem Omar, head of the People's Republican Party; and Ahmed El-Fadaly, chairman of the Democratic Peace Party.
