"A brawl broke out between some youth in Matrouh city who were clamouring over taking photos with Libyan poets and the authorities arrested the culprits,” read a statement by the interior ministry on Tuesday.
The interior ministry statement comes after some social media users shared videos purportedly showing some people chanting against President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on a main street in the northwestern city on Monday evening. The videos surfaced shortly after the end of a sizeable gathering of citizens who came out to urge El-Sisi to run for another term in the upcoming elections.
Earlier on Monday evening, President El-Sisi announced in a speech that he is running for another six-year term until 2030 in the elections slated for December.
Thousands of the president's supporters watched the speech live in a number of public squares in several governorates, including Matrouh.
