Abdel-Hady, one of the founders of the opposition Democratic Civil Movement, was accused by the prosecution of spreading and airing false news, misusing a social media platform, and working with a terrorist organisation.

The veteran political activist stated that he would file an appeal against the court ruling.

Egyptian political activist Yahia Hussein Abdel-Hady received in May a presidential pardon after he was sentenced to four years in prison for intentionally spreading false news about Egypt locally and internationally.

Abdel-Hady gained popularity during the Mubarak era for criticising and standing in court against privatisation policies.
