Bahgat wrote on his Facebook page that the authorities released TV presenter Hala Fahmy, who was arrested in April 2022 after being charged with “disseminating false news on social media platforms."
The list of released detainees also included journalist Manal Ajrama, the deputy editor-in-chief of Radio and Television Magazine, who was arrested in November 2022.
It also includes, Safaa El-Korbiji, the editorial secretary of Radio and Television Magazine, arrested in April 2022 over charges of “misusing social media and spreading false news.”
In addition, the Egyptian authorities released 11 out of 14 teachers arrested for staging a protest in mid-October 2023 after their applications for a public competition to hire 30,000 teachers were rejected.
Head of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate Khaled El-Balshy confirmed the release of Fahmy, Ajrama, and El-Korbiji.
Since April 2022, the Public Prosecution has released hundreds of pretrial detainees as part of the government's efforts to engage in a national dialogue with opposition and societal forces.
In addition, President El-Sisi issued several pardons for high-profile activists who had received final verdicts in various cases.
The Presidential Pardon Committee, established in 2016 to review the cases of pretrial detainees and others who fulfil specific criteria, was reactivated in April 2022.
The Board of Trustees of Egypt’s National Dialogue welcomed the releases, according to a statement by Dia Rashwan, the dialogue’s general coordinator.
Rashwan said the step would provide a more positive atmosphere for the continued success of the National Dialogue.
