On 14 December, Ismailia’s Military Criminal Court sentenced 62 individuals from North Sinai (54 in custody and eight in absentia) to prison terms ranging from three to 10 years, according to the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR).
The case dates back to August 2023, marking 10 years since the displacement of Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid residents during counterterrorism operations, when locals staged a sit-in demanding their right to return, with authorities promising a return by October.
In October 2023, hundreds protested again, urging authorities to honour their commitment. However, protesters rioted, leading to the arrest of several individuals and their subsequent trials on charges of damaging vehicles owned by the Armed Forces.
According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi's decision comes in response to requests from representatives, sheikhs, and elders of Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai.
"It also comes in recognition of the historic role played by the people of Sinai in combating terrorism and achieving development and stability," the presidential statement read.
In addition, the statement highlighted President El-Sisi's concern for the humanitarian conditions of convicts in various cases across Egypt.
El-Sisi has frequently issued presidential pardons for prisoners during national holidays and special occasions to promote societal reconciliation.
