Egypt’s Public Prosecution has opened an investigation into a fire at an unlicensed addiction treatment centre in the city of Benha, north of Cairo, that killed seven people and injured six others, authorities said on Monday.

A prosecution team inspected the site to determine the cause of the blaze, which broke out at the facility in Qalyubia governorate.

A health official in Qalyubia confirmed the death toll had risen to seven, while six injured people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

A security source said six of the victims remain unidentified as they were not carrying identification documents. The source added that the centre was operating without a licence to provide addiction treatment services.

Preliminary findings indicate the victims died from smoke inhalation rather than direct burns.

The bodies were transferred to Benha Teaching Hospital, where legal procedures are underway.

Civil defence forces managed to bring the fire under control shortly after it was reported. Authorities said further details would be released once investigations are complete.
