The trade exchange between Spain and Egypt reached 1.96 billion euros in the first nine months of 2021 compared to 583 million euros in the same period in 2020, an increase of 23.8 percent, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

El-Sisi and Sanchez agreed to form a joint high committee to boost bilateral relations.

El-Sisi also revealed that he discussed with Sanchez the latest developments concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), reiterating Egypt’s aim to reach a fair and legally binding agreement on the filling and operation policies of the dam. He added that it is important for the international community to push for this agreement and support the talks to achieve this goal.

The talks also included an exchange of visions concerning the coronavirus pandemic, and how Egypt has managed to achieve a balance between imposing precautionary measures and ensuring the continuity of economic activity.

Prime Minister Sanchez said during the press conference that concrete steps were taken during his visit that will have significant impacts on cooperation between Egypt and Spain.

Sanchez also said that there are promising development opportunities in Egypt for Spanish companies.

This is the first visit by a Spanish PM to Egypt since 2010.

Sanchez arrived in Egypt on Tuesday at the head of a delegation of large Spanish construction and transport companies, as the Spanish government has an eye on contributing to Egypt’s development efforts in infrastructure and transportation, according to Spanish media.

Earlier Wednesday, the Spanish PM and his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly inaugurated the Egyptian Spanish business summit in Cairo.

Madbouly announced during the inauguration that the two countries renewed the Egyptian-Spanish 400-million-euro financial cooperation protocol.
