Shoukry made the remarks in a meeting on Wednesday with Azzam Al-Ahmad, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and a member of Fatah's Central Committee.

Shoukry said Egypt will continue exerting efforts and communication with different parties to set the stage for reviving negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis as soon as possible, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez said.

The top Egyptian diplomat also said Egypt supports all steps to boost the political, economic and developmental situation in Palestine, Hafez added.

Ahmad briefed Shoukry on the latest developments in the Palestinian arena, according to the spokesman.

The Palestinian official expressed appreciation for Egypt's painstaking efforts to support the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people in overcoming the different challenges they face, said Hafez.

Egypt has repeatedly called for creating the appropriate climate for the resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and affirmed the need for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 borders.

Egypt brokered a ceasefire between Israeli and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip last year, ending 11 days of Israeli aggression that killed about 250 Palestinians and caused financial losses estimated at $450 million.

Egypt has pledged $500 million to rebuild Gaza and delivered tons of aid and materials, including bulldozers, trucks, and utility poles, as well as dozens of Egyptian workers, to finish the reconstruction process in the strip, a home to more than 2 million Palestinians.
