Egypt welcomed on Wednesday the successful holding of elections in Somalia that ended with declaring Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the country’s new president, the Egyptian foreign ministry said. 

Mohamud ruled Somalia between 2012 and 2017 and is the first president to win a second term in the country.

The Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement that Egypt supports all efforts to boost peace and stability and achieve sustainable development in Somalia.

Egypt also expressed its support for Somalia in its counterterrorism efforts.
