The meeting, held under the theme of “History at a Turning Point: Government Policies and Business Strategies,” will see the participation of about 2,500 political, business, civil society and media leaders.

The 2022 meeting will be the WEF’s first in-person annual meeting for more than two years, where leaders are scheduled to tackle global issues, including the coronavirus pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, geo-economic shocks and climate change.

Within the framework of the forum, Shoukry will participate in an event on the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP27), which Egypt will host in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh in November, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The event will tackle partnerships between the private and public sectors in the field of climate action in the Middle East and North Africa, according to the statement.

On the sidelines of the annual meeting, Shoukry will also meet with a number of high-level officials from different countries participating in the forum.

These meetings will address ongoing preparations for Egypt’s hosting of COP27 and discuss means of cooperation to enhance global climate action at all levels.

This especially includes enhancing adaption measures to, and mitigating the negative repercussions of, climate change, the ministry said. The meetings will also highlight the importance of providing climate finance and implementing climate pledges on the ground.

Egypt has repeatedly affirmed that it will work through COP27 to enhance international action to handle climate change at all levels, achieve the goals of the Paris agreement, support efforts to reduce emissions and provide funding for developing countries to deal with the phenomenon.

Egypt launched on Thursday the National Strategy for Climate Change 2050, five months ahead of the conference, with numerous goals, including bolstering Egypt’s climate change leadership internationally.

This is in addition to achieving sustainable development and economic growth and preserving natural resources and ecosystems.

As per the strategy, the state seeks to expand reliance on renewable energy sources, reduce fossil fuel emissions, and adopt sustainable consumption and production models to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from other non-energy-based activities.
