The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement stating that the Egyptian government and people express condolences to the government and people of the sisterly Federal Republic of Nigeria including the families of victims and wish the injured a speedy recovery.
The statement also confirmed Egypt's full solidarity with Nigeria in facing all forms of violence. The Foreign Ministry added that Egypt will stand by Nigeria through these painful circumstances.
At least 50 people – including children – were killed and others injured, when gunmen attacked worshippers attending the Pentecost Sunday Mass at St. Francis Catholic Church in the state of Ondo, according to the Nigerian authorities. Meanwhile, another group of gunmen waited outside the church and attacked worshippers fleeing the scene.
The authorities stated that it is still unknown who was behind the massacre as the gunmen managed to flee.
While northern Nigeria has witnessed an Islamic insurgency for more than 13 years, Ondo has long been considered one of the most peaceful states in the country.
