Madbouly will partake in Mohamud’s inauguration ceremony Thursday on behalf of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, the Egyptian cabinet said in a statement.

“The high-level Egyptian participation in the inauguration ceremony is a confirmation of the historical relations that bind the two countries since the independence of Somalia in 1960,” the statement said.

During his visit, Madbouly is scheduled to meet with President Mohamud to deliver a congratulatory message from El-Sisi and reaffirm the unwavering Egyptian stance in providing all types of support to Somalia and the Somali people.

The visit comes within the framework of El-Sisi’s affirmation of “Egypt’s determination to support all possible support to the sisterly Somalia in order to build and consolidate the state institutions,” the statement added.

Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and Egypt’s ambassador to Mogadishu received Madbouly at the airport.

Mohamud, 66, won the presidency in voting by parliamentarians last month, defeating outgoing-President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo by 214-110 votes.

This iss Mohamud’s second time being elected president, having served in the position 2012-2017.

His tenure comes as the country of more than 15 million people has suffered from clan battles since the fall of President Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. This is in addition to frequent attacks by Islamist militias on state institutions and one of its worst droughts.

Mohamud has vowed to return Somalia to stability and work on securing the country in the Horn of Africa against Al-Shabaab militia, which is responsible for killing thousands of civilians in East Africa.

Egypt has repeatedly affirmed keenness to push forward bilateral relations with Somalia in all fields and providing the African nation with all forms of support.

Egypt welcomed the successful holding of the Somali elections and has also reiterated support to the political path in Somalia and efforts to put the country back on the path to reconstruction and stability.
