German defence minister hails Egypt's efforts in hosting over 6 million refugees

German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht praised on Monday Egypt’s efforts in hosting more than 6 million refugees and providing them with decent lives despite the huge burdens this puts on the country.

In a meeting with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, the German defence minister asserted support for cooperation in the military and security fields, especially in combating terrorism, border control, and irregular migration, presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said.

For his part, El-Sisi asserted Egypt’s keenness to continue strengthening bonds with Germany on various levels, including the military field, in light of the growing regional challenges, with terrorism being at the top of these challenges.

El-Sisi affirmed that necessity of concerted efforts to advance the mechanisms of confronting this cross-border challenge at the international level.

During the meeting, El-Sisi and Lambrecht exchanged views on the latest developments in a number of regional issues in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. They agreed to enhance coordination in facing the challenges whose effects extend beyond the region.

Moreover, Lambrecht expressed her country's appreciation for the recent growth and prosperity of Egyptian-German relations, stressing Germany's interest in deepening these longstanding relations.

El-Sisi is on an official visit to Berlin, where he discussed today enhancing bilateral relations and boosting coordination on regional and international issues in meetings with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

El-Sisi also attended the 13th edition of the Petersburg Climate Dialogue co-chaired by Egypt and Germany as the last international stop ahead of the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) set to be hosted by Egypt's Sharm El-Sheikh city this November.
