Kerry's visit to Cairo is set to take place as Egypt continues intensive consultations with international partners to push for urgent climate action ahead of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP27) that the country is hosting from 6-18 November in Sharm El-Sheikh.
According to the press release, Kerry will also participate in the second edition of the Egypt-International Cooperation Forum (Egypt-ICF) 2022 and Meeting of the African Ministers of Finance and Environment,
After his visit to Cairo, Kerry will head to Glasgow, United Kingdom on 9 September to engage business and NGO leaders on efforts to enhance global climate action and accelerate the clean energy transition, the released added.
John Kerry, a former US Secretary of State 2013-2017, was appointed by President Joe Biden as the first US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate in January 2021.
In recent months, he has been coordinating with Egyptian officials closely in prepartion for the COP27.
In February, Kerry and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, the president-designate of COP27, launched the US-Egypt Climate Working Group in order to advance bilateral and multilateral climate goals ahead of the COP27, and also to support Egypt's plans to transition towards clean and renewable forms of energy.
The E-ICF 2022 forum, which will be held in the New Administrative Capital (NAC) 7-9 to September, will host a Meeting of the African Ministers of Finance and Environment with the aim of formulating a unified African vision on climate financing and climate change adaptation programs as well as national actions needed for the green transition ahead of the COP27, according to the Ministry of International Cooperation.
Under the auspices of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, E-ICF 2022 is organised by the Egyptian ministries of foreign affairs, international cooperation, finance, and environment, with the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Africa as co-convener.
Ministers of environment, finance and economy from African countries will participate in the forum along with NGOs and representatives of civil society.
