In a statement on Wednesday, the Egyptian foreign ministry said “Egypt denounces the targeting of areas in the Kurdistan region in Iraq that resulted in innocent civilian casualties in a blatant violation of the security and sovereignty of Iraq.”

The statement comes as nine people were killed and 32 injured in drone attacks launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) against several locations in the Kurdistan region of the country since Monday.

“Egypt offers its sincere condolences to the government and people of Iraq for the loss of the victims of this attack, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured,” the statement added.

The foreign ministry stated Egypt has been monitoring the rise in tensions in the region in recent days and has warned about its impact on the stability of the region and safety of its peoples.

Iranian authorities accused Iranian Kurdish parties currently in exile in Iraqi Kurdistan of standing behind the series of violent protests that erupted in tens of Iranian cities following the death of a Kurdish Iranian woman, Mahsa Amin, while in custody over violating the hijab dress code.

Iranian activists said at least 76 were killed by the Iranian security forces since the start of the protests almost two weeks ago.
