Shoukry made the remarks at a press conference following a tripartite summit in Amman with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman al-Safadi and Iraq’s Fouad Hussein.

"The trilateral mechanism aims to strengthen the existing ties based on integration between our countries, as well as enhance economic opportunities," Shoukry said, adding that it also aims to stabilise the situation in the Middle East and intensify joint Arab action.

He also announced an upcoming meeting of the ministers of the three countries in Iraq, with the aim of pushing the implementation of various projects and exploring other areas of cooperation.

The Baghdad conference will be held to affirm Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity, Shoukry said, stressing Egypt's keenness to attend every occasion that leads to strengthening Iraq's capabilities, as Iraq is essential to preserving Arab national security.

“What afflicted Iraq in the past has had a negative impact on preserving Arab national security and the continuation of joint Arab action,” he said.

In late November, Egypt said repeated attacks carried out by Iran and Turkey against Iraq and Syria violate the sovereignty of these countries, calling for de-escalation to prevent bloodshed and spare the region more instability.

During Wednesday’s summit, Shoukry also praised Iraq and Jordan for their strong support and backing of Egypt’s water security.

In June 2021, the leaders of Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan held a summit in which they agreed that Egypt’s water security is part of Arab national security, supporting Egypt’s “rational positions” to reach an agreement on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam that is based on international law and respects the legitimate rights of both Egypt and Sudan.

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan and Iraq have held a series of periodic meetings since 2019.

The last meeting was in late October on the sidelines of the Arab summit in Algeria, while the last summit was held in Baghdad in June 2021.

In August 2022, Egypt’s New Alamein city hosted a summit meeting between the three leaders with the participation of both the president of the United Arab Emirates and the King of Bahrain.
