Sisi, Burhan reiterate need to reach binding deal on Ethiopian dam

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and head of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan reiterated on Friday the need to reach a legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

As they met on the sidelines of the first China-Arab summit, which will be held Friday in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, El-Sisi and Burhan affirmed that any GERD agreement should achieve the joint interests of all parties.

In this regard, the two leaders highlighted the utmost importance of the water issue to the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples as a matter of national security.

El-Sisi affirmed to Burhan Egypt's support for the recently reached Political Framework Agreement as an important step to establish governonance structure principles and support the Sudanese state in ensuring the success of the political process through a Sudanese consensus to achieve stability and prosperity for the country.
