Cairo supports all efforts that are aimed at reviving the peace process and resuming negotiations in accordance with these standards, El-Sisi told Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham in a meeting held Thursday on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington DC.
The Egyptian president called for guaranteeing the Palestinian people's aspirations and hopes to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, said a statement by the Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady.
This matter "could change the current status quo and open horizons for a new phase of security, progress and peaceful coexistence for all peoples of the region," added El-Sisi.
On Wednesday, in a meeting with leaders of US Jewish organisations, El-Sisi also affirmed that resolving the Palestinian cause will clear the way for a new era of peace, cooperation, development, and peaceful coexistence in the region.
Egypt has repeatedly called for a settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative whereby an independent Palestinian state is formed on the 4 June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Along with international players, Egypt has sought over the past years to revive the negotiations which have frozen between the two sides since 2014.
Together with, Jordan, France and Germany, Egypt formed in February 2020 a quartet group – the Munich Committee – with the aim of reviving the halted peace negotiations.
Thursday's meeting also tackled a number of regional issues, chief among which were the crises in Syria, Libya and Yemen.
El-Sisi said Egypt will sustain its "strenuous" efforts to contribute to settling regional crises directly affecting the security and stability of the region and the world.
Egypt, he clarified, always seeks political solutions and supports national institutions as the best way to counter terrorists, including their efforts to spread chaos and demolish the concept of the state.
El-Sisi also expressed Egypt's keenness on promoting its partnership with the US in the various fields of common interest, voicing appreciation for the outstanding and extended relations binding the two countries.
Graham expressed his agreement, saying the US looks forward to enhancing the strategic partnership linking the two countries together.
El-Sisi participated over the past three days along 49 head of state and government from African in the US-Africa Leaders Summit in the American capital.
The summit, hosted by US president Joe Biden, is the second since the first one was held in 2014 by Barack Obama.
