Spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Zeid extended his condolences to the government and people of Azerbaijan over the killing of a staff member of its embassy.
"We affirm Egypt's full solidarity with Azerbaijan in this painful incident," Abu Zeid tweeted.
The attack was carried out by a man armed with a Kalashnikov as per a statement released on Friday by Azerbaijan's foreign ministry.
Tehran said the assailant who carried out the attack was motivated by "personal" reasons.
However, Azerbaijani foreign ministry spokesman Ayxan Hacizada told local media that the responsibility for the attack lies with Iran.
Hacizada added a recent anti-Azerbaijani campaign in Iranian media had "encouraged the attack," reported AFP.
Following the attack, Azerbaijan said it was evacuating staff from its embassy in Tehran.
