This came during a meeting today on the sidelines of the 42nd Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa.

During the meeting, Bekele-Thomas congratulated Egypt on assuming the presidency of the steering committee of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

Bekele-Thomas also highlighted during the meeting with FM Shoukry AUDA-NEPAD's priorities in the coming period.

These priorities include mobilising financial resources to carry out infrastructure and connectivity projects in the continent, she said.

They also included implementing Energize Africa Initiative which focuses on catalysing and harnessing the youths’ potential creativity and innovativeness towards Africa’s economic growth and development drive, she added.

Bekele-Thomas noted that owning the continent's present and future requires a high degree of imagination and innovation that will only come from its youth.

For this reason, she added, AUDA-NEPAD has designed Energize Africa to fast-track capacity mobilisation for program delivery and transformation on the continent.

Bekele-Thomas said she looks forward to close coordination and cooperation with the Egyptian presidency of the steering committee, voicing hope to visit Egypt to probe various development files.
