In a meeting in Cairo, Mubarak offered his country's full support to Egypt and its national security in the face of any challenges, including its water security, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Egypt, which suffers from significant water scarcity, has been in negotiations with Ethiopia and Sudan for ten years to reach a legally binding agreement regulating the rules for filling and operating the dam. Cairo fears that its water supply would be diminished by unilateral actions related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Mubarak also handed Shoukry a written message from Head of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, in which he addressed ways to further strengthen Egyptian-Yemeni ties. Mubarak also reviewed the latest developments in Yemen and the ongoing efforts to reach a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.
Shoukry voiced appreciation for Yemen's keenness to coordinate with Cairo and keep it informed of the latest developments on the crisis there. He stressed Egypt's support for the legitimate Yemeni government, extending the UN truce, and encouraging all efforts aimed at finding a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the conflict.
The two foreign ministers also discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations, including the convening of the joint committee between the two countries and upgrading the level of bilateral relations through the political consultation mechanism at the level of the Egyptian and Yemeni ministries of foreign affairs.
The conflict in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthi rebels overran the capital of Sanaa and ousted the internationally recognized government from power. Since then, more than 150,000 people have been killed, and three million have been displaced. The Yemeni community in Egypt receives the same treatment as Egyptian citizens in many service sectors such as education and health, within the framework of the historical ties and firm bonds that bind the two brotherly countries and peoples.
