Shoukry updated Faki on the emergency meeting of the Arab League’s Council of Permanent Representatives which Egypt and Saudi Arabia had called for to discuss the current crisis in Sudan. The meeting was held earlier on Sunday.

The two officials also discussed the African Union Peace and Security Council session dedicated to discussing the situation in Sudan.

Shoukry also informed Faki of Egypt's efforts to urge the Sudanese parties to stop the violence and bloodshed.

He also mentioned the call he had earlier that day with Sudan's Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti to discuss efforts to end the crisis, and to ensure the safety and security of Egyptians in Sudan in light of the deteriorating security situation.

Shoukry and Faki agreed to continue consultations and coordination in the coming days to keep abreast of the developments of the crisis and the efforts to contain it.

Meanwhile, fighting in the Sudanese capital raged into the early hours of Sunday after a day of deadly battles between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that left at least 56 civilians dead and nearly 600 wounded.

In an earlier statement on Saturday, Egypt's foreign ministry called on all Sudanese parties to exercise maximum restraint to "protect the lives and capabilities of the brotherly Sudanese people and uphold the supreme interests of their homeland."

It was announced earlier that Moussa Faki was going to travel to Sudan within the coming hours as the head of a ceasefire mission.
