Under the auspices of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, the workshop is being organised by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacebuilding, and Peacekeeping (CCCPA) along with the African Union Commission and the African Development Agency (NEPAD).

The goals of the workshop are consistent with the Egyptian vision of the importance of pushing for peace-building and reconstruction efforts and adopting a comprehensive approach to the challenges facing the African continent.

The workshop is meant to address developmental, social, and humanitarian dimensions as key factors causing conflicts, in parallel with efforts to build national capacities that are the main gateway to achieving sustainable peace.

A number of officials participated in the workshop, including the commissioner for political affairs, peace and security of the African Union, as well as the executive director of the African Development Agency, along with representatives of international institutions and embassies.

During his speech at the inauguration of the workshop, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Organizations and Assemblies Ashraf Sweilam highlighted the centrality of African relations in Egypt's foreign policy and the country's interest in achieving sustainable peace across the continent.

Sweilam emphasised the importance of the role that the NEPAD Centre, hosted by Egypt, will play in developing and implementing peace-building and sustainability projects, as well as coordinating regional and international efforts in this regard.

The Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye expressed his gratitude for Egypt's pivotal role in achieving stability and sustainable peace across the continent.

In his opening speech, the Director of the CCCPA Ahmed Nahad Abdel-Latif, said peace-building and reconstruction efforts are crucial to achieving security and stability.

He pointed out that the workshop is part of the preparatory process for the fourth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, reviewing the national capacity-building efforts carried out by CCCPA.

In October 2018, Egypt hosted a two-day expert workshop titled “Operationalizing the African Union Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Policy in the Sahel: Charting the Way Forward."
