El-Sisi’s remarks came during his meeting with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on Monday. The meeting was attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and top officials from the European Commission, according to a statement by Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy.

Borrell praised the distinguished relations between Egypt and the EU, highlighting Egypt’s political weight regionally and internationally, in addition to its key role in regional security and peace, rendering it a valuable strategic partner for the EU.

El-Sisi and Borrell reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing relations, dialogue, and cooperation, particularly in combating illegal migration and terrorism. They also discussed ongoing coordination on international and regional issues, including developments in Sudan, where Borrell praised Egypt’s efforts in welcoming refugees and encouraging a ceasefire, added the statement.

Egypt has opened its doors to Sudanese refugees who have reached 250,000, according to a statement by Shoukry on Monday.

During Borrell’s press conference with Shoukry on Monday, he announced the EU’s €100 million provision to Egypt to help absorb the new wave of Sudanese refugees.

El-Sisi and Borrell also tackled the Palestinian cause, agreeing on maximising efforts to achieve peace and resolve the conflict according to international regulations that reinstate the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and support the security and development of the region.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments in the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. El-Sisi stressed the importance of expanding international efforts to curb the economic effects of the crisis across the world, the statement added.
