Shoukry’s remarks came during his virtual participation at a high-level conference to support the humanitarian response in Sudan, according to a statement issued by the Ministry’s Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The conference was organized by Egypt in cooperation with the United Nations, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Germany, the African Union and the European Union.
During his speech, Shoukry emphasized that Egypt will continue its efforts with all parties to stop the violence and promote dialogue. He also stressed the importance of regional and international organizations’ role in resolving the crisis.
Shoukry also highlighted the importance of reaching a sustainable ceasefire to stop the bloodshed and preserve the Sudanese state’s capabilities and institutions.
In this regard, Shoukry revealed that Egypt and Qatar will launch a joint initiative to provide aid to the Sudanese people in light of deteriorating security, economic and humanitarian conditions.
Egypt has opened its doors to Sudanese refugees since the outbreak of violence, providing all the necessary resources and humanitarian aid, Shoukry explained.
Egypt has already received over 250,000 Sudanese, or about 60 percent of the total number who have fled their country, in addition to the five million Sudanese who were already living in Egypt, Shoukry added.
Moreover, Shoukry noted, Egypt has provided around 300 tons of urgent medical and food aid those fleeing the violence and facilitated the evacuation of about 10,000 foreigners working in diplomatic missions and international organizations.
Finally, the minister urged the international community to provide urgent humanitarian aid to Sudan, as well as provide the necessary funding to implement development projects to achieve peaceful coexistence and social harmony, the statement concluded.
