According to the presidential decree 266/2023, Ambassador El-Hamami, Egypt’s charges d’affaires in Ankara, will serve as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Turkey, the official gazette reported on Saturday.

Early in July, Egypt nominated Ambassador El-Hamami for the role, while Turkey appointed Salih Mutlu Şen ambassador to Cairo.

Appointing ambassadors in Cairo and Ankara aims to reestablish normal relations between the two countries.

It also demonstrates their eagerness to foster bilateral relations, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.

Who is El-Hamami?

Ambassador El-Hamami has been serving as chargé d'affaires at the Egyptian embassy in Ankara since 2019.

He also assumed high-level diplomatic positions, including his appointment as deputy director of the Egyptian foreign minister’s office for legal affairs and the UN between 2018 and 2019.

In addition, El-Hamami served as legal councillor for the Egyptian Mission to the United Nations in New York from 2011 to 2015.

He held the position of consul at Egypt's embassies in Niger, Denmark, and Bulgaria.

From 2009 to 2011, he served as head of the legal and consular affairs at the foreign ministry’s office.

Back to normal

Following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's re-election in May, President El-Sisi and Erdoğan agreed to immediately upgrade diplomatic relations and exchange ambassadors to begin normalizing ties between the two countries after a decade-long rift.

Top diplomats in both countries exchanged visits in March and April.

El-Sisi will make his first presidential visit to Turkey on 27 July, according to Al-Qahera News, citing Turkish media reports.
