Egypt has called on its citizens in Gabon to exercise the utmost caution in light of the current developments, according to a statement by the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Zeid.

Egyptians must avoid areas of security tension and communicate with the Egyptian embassy in Libreville to ensure their safety, stressed Abu Zeid.

Gabonese military personnel seized power in the country minutes after the announcement of presidential election results on Wednesday that would have extended the Bongo family’s 55-year rule.

Three-time elected President Ali Bongo Ondimba has reportedly been placed under house arrest while his son has been charged with “treason.”

Egypt is closely following the developments taking place in Gabon, confirmed Abu Zeid.

"We call on all parties to uphold Gabon’s national interest in order to preserve the security, stability and safety of the country," he added.
