So far no victims or injured people have been detected among members of the Egyptian community, said Ahmed Abu Zeid, the spokesman for the Egyptian foreign ministry.

The Egyptian foreign ministry said it has been in contact with the relevant Moroccan authorities, the Egyptian embassy in Morocco, and Egyptian expat associations to verify the safety of Egyptians in the affected areas, read a statement on Saturday.

The quake, which struck late on Friday and was followed by a 4.9 aftershock, killed at least 1,000 people and left around 700 others in critical condition, according to Moroccan officials.

The foreign ministry extended its condolences to the Moroccan government, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

The quake hit the High Atlas Mountains, southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, causing several buildings to partially or fully collapse.

Rescue operations in search of survivors are still ongoing.
