Shoukry, also COP27 president, called for adopting practical steps on climate justice and financing.
He also highlighted the importance of international cooperation, particularly in providing funding to implement developing countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
According to the United Nations website, Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs, are countries' self-defined national climate pledges under the Paris Agreement, detailing what they will do to help meet the global goal, outlined by the Paris Agreement, to reduce global warming by 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050. The contributions also include the countries' efforts to adapt to climate impacts and ensure sufficient finance to support these efforts.
Shoukry's remarks came during his participation in the ministerial meeting of the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78).
The Global Stocktake, which began in 2022, is a two-year process that aims to collectively review the progress on meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, which in turn targets limiting global warming by 1.5 degrees by 2050.
The first Global Stocktake since the ratification of the Paris Climate Change Agreement in 2015 is scheduled to conclude at COP28 in Dubai in November.
Shoukry also expressed Egypt's full support for the vision presented by COP28 UAE President-Designate Sultan Al-Jaber.
Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of technology transfer to developing countries, noting that Egypt, as the President of COP27, will spare no effort to support the outcomes of the Global Stocktake process.
On Thursday, Shoukry participated in the UN Climate Ambition Summit in New York.
He described the summit as a reminder to the international community of its commitment to take bold and ambitious steps to protect the planet for the next generations.
The COP27 summit, held in the Red Sea city of Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022, culminated in a landmark deal on establishing a loss and damage fund to help vulnerable countries cope with the devastating impacts of climate change.
All eyes, however, are on the upcoming COP28 in Dubai, which is expected to make headway on the issue of reducing emissions.
