The meeting took place in New York on Thursday on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78).

Shoukry and Diop discussed several issues, including the political and security situation in West Africa, the rise of violence, the expansion of terrorist activity in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin regions, and the situation in Niger.

Diop briefed Shoukry about Mali's progress in holding a referendum on constitutional amendments in June 2023, stressing that the referendum was crucial for restoring constitutional rule in Mali.

For his part, Shoukry underlined Egypt's support for the Malian state’s efforts to fight terrorism, restore security and public order, and regain control over all state territories.

He added that this support involves helping the Malian state enhance security measures and counter-terrorism efforts while building capacity through programmes provided by both the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development and the Cairo International Centre for Peacekeeping and Conflict Resolution (CCCPA).

Furthermore, the Egyptian foreign minister highlighted the importance of collaborating with the Sahel and Desert Centre for Counterterrorism as an institution that, like Al-Azhar, can also play a role in confronting extremist ideas.

Shoukry also expressed Egypt's support for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Niger.
