According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, Egypt called on the Israeli authorities to immediately halt such acts, which violate the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and provoke millions of Muslims around the world.

Cairo reiterated its call on international parties to assume their responsibility to protect the right of Palestinians to establish a state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in order to achieve a just and comprehensive solution to the decades-old conflict.

Under heavy protection from Israeli forces, scores of Israeli settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam located in the Old City of occupied Jerusalem, to mark the anniversary of the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday.

The Israeli settlers were led by extremist Israeli rabbi and MP Yehuda Glick, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The Israeli forces tightened their security measures and blocked Palestinian worshippers from entering the Mosque, according to media reports.

Israeli settlers and extremist ministers in the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have stormed Al-Aqsa on multiple occasions in recent months. 

Less than a week ago, hundreds of Israeli extremists stormed the mosque to mark the Jewish New Year and perform religious rituals.

In July, Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a member of the Knesset and leader of the far right-wing party Otzma Yehudit, stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque in celebration of the Jewish holiday Tisha B’Av.

It was the third time for Ben-Gvir to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque since assuming the ministerial position earlier this year.
