In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended sincere condolences to the Afghan state and people over the victims of the quake.

Egypt expressed full solidarity with Afghanistan in this ordeal, praying to God to bestow his mercy upon the victims and grant their families patience.

Egypt also wishes the injured a speedy recovery, the ministry said.

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck near Afghanistan’s third-largest city of Herat, followed by strong aftershocks that were also felt in nearby Afghan cities.

The quakes killed more than 2,000 and injured over 9,000 others, Reuters quoting what the Taliban administration said on Sunday.

Hundreds of families had to leave their homes after the quake reportedly devastated at least 12 villages.
