The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) dispatched first batch of emergency medical aid to Gaza via Rafah border crossing on Sunday evening, the Palestinian Red Crescent said in a statement on Monday.

The step aims to support the efforts of the Palestinian Red Crescent in providing the necessary medical services amid the current escalation in the strip, added the statement.

In a phone-in with Al-Qahera News channel earlier today, Palestinian Red Crescent spokesman Mohamed Abu-Musbah praised the Egyptian people and the ERC’s support calling it a "lifeline" for the strip.

He noted that the ERC is in constant touch with its counterpart in Gaza.

Abu-Musbah also said that the strategic medical reserves in the enclave are currently at an alarming rate given the rising rate of injuries.

On Sunday, North Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel-Fadil Shousha said the governorate has allocated a spot for receiving humanitarian and relief aid in preparation for its entry into Gaza through the Rafah border crossing.

The Israeli army said it hit more than 500 targets in the Gaza Strip overnight while fighting persisted in seven to eight locations inside Israel around the enclave.

It came two days after Hamas launched "Al-Aqsa Flood" operation, a barrage of rockets, and sent a wave of fighters who gunned down Israelis and captured at least 100 in a massive attack that took the country by surprise.

Israeli air strikes have hammered the impoverished and blockaded Gaza Strip, an enclave of 2.3 million people, with officials there reporting at least 413 Palestinians killed by Israel.

More than 700 Israelis have been killed since Hamas launched its large-scale attack.
