Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee
“People are directed to areas and shelters within the borders of the Gaza Strip without leaving it,” Adraee wrote on X, asserting that the Israeli forces are evacuating civilians from areas where Hamas has military presence.
Israel has announced a "state of war" in retaliation for surprise attacks launched by Hamas fighters on Saturday, killing around 1,000 Israelis so far and taking dozens more captive.
On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told people in Gaza, which shares a border with Egypt, to “leave now because we will operate forcefully everywhere.”
Subsequently, Israel sealed Gaza of food, fuel, and essential supplies and launched heavy air strikes, the deadliest on the strip in 15 years.
Adraee’s remarks seem to backtrack on recent advice by Israeli military spokesman Richard Hecht, where he suggested while addressing foreign reporters that people in Gaza head to Egypt.
However, Hecht’s office revised the call shortly afterward, saying in a statement that the Rafah crossing on the Sinai-Gaza border, which was open Monday, is now closed.
The Israeli remarks have triggered a strict response by Egyptian security sources today, who warned of the resurgence of a frequently proposed Israeli scheme to resettle Gazans in Sinai.
The security sources told the media that such an Israeli scheme is “historically and politically corrupt,” stressing that Egypt as well as the Palestinian people have always rejected this proposal.
On Tuesday evening, the Israeli ambassador to Egypt Amira Oron issued a statement on her official Facebook page in Arabic noting: "Israel has no intentions regarding Sinai, and it has not asked the Palestinians to move there."
The Israeli ambassador added that "Israel is committed to the peace treaty with Egypt which clearly defines the borders between the two countries."
On Monday, high-level Egyptian sources also warned against pushing Palestinians towards Egyptian borders and evacuating Gaza’s inhabitants to liquidate the Palestinian cause.
The high-level sources affirmed that “the Egyptian sovereignty is not to be violated.”
