According to the Russian embassy in Cairo, Lavrov and Shoukry highlighted the root causes of the unprecedented escalation in the region, emphasizing that the primary reason for it was the absence of any progress in the political resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

They pointed out that such a resolution should be based on well-established international law principles.

The phone call between Lavrov and Shoukry came shortly after a call between President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Last week, the two foreign ministers had also another call at the beginning of the crisis, in which they discussed the way to de-escalate it.
