French President Emmanuel Macron is heading to Cairo to meet with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi amid fears the Israel war on Gaza could escalate throughout the region, according to France24.

Before meeting Sisi, Macron is set to hold talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman on Wednesday on the second leg of his regional tour, according to France24.

His visit comes as the United Nations warned it would be forced to stop its operations in the embattled Gaza Strip on Wednesday due to dwindling fuel supplies.

During the first leg of his tour of Tuesday, Macron visited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.

After meeting with Netanyahu, Macron stressed Israel’s right to defend itself in its war with Hamas.

Before his visit, Macron’s office stated that he would seek a "humanitarian truce" in Gaza, but no mention of this was made after his talks with Netanyahu.

Macron proposed on Tuesday that the international coalition fighting Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria should widen its scope to include the fight against Hamas in Gaza, adding that "France is ready" to do so.

30 French citizens were killed in the 7 October assault by Hamas. Nine French citizens are still missing or held captive.

During the Cairo Peace Summit on Saturday, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna said that while France supports “Israel’s right to defend itself,” France also supports the rights of the Palestinians.

"The only viable solution is a two-state solution," Colonna said.

El-Sisi has repeatedly strongly condemned the actions of Israel, the targeting of civilians, the forced displacement of Palestinians, and the collective punishment inflicted upon Gaza.

During the summit, El-Sisi also reiterated his strong support for the sustained delivery of aid through the Rafah crossing.
