The Egyptian Foreign Ministry described the decision as a blatant violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions on the illegitimacy of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Egypt emphasized its unequivocal rejection of Israeli settlement policies in all occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, and the repeated attempts to undermine the legal, historical, and demographic status quo, seeking to separate parts of the land from their Palestinian surroundings.
Egypt called on Israel to halt its illegitimate settlement activities.
The statement reiterated Egypt’s call to influential international parties, the UN and its relevant bodies, to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting the rights of the Palestinian people and to stop Israel's unilateral settlement operations.
These settlements, says Egypt, undermine the foundations of the future peace process and a final resolution between the Palestinian and Israeli parties.
Egypt also emphasized the need for Israel to cease exploiting the world's preoccupation with their war on Gaza to intensify its illegitimate practices in the West Bank, such as the building of settlements.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967 and annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move that was never recognized by most of the international community.
A supporter of the two-state solution, Egypt has long called for the establishment of a Palestinian state within the borders of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
