In a statement, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi mourned the loss of Sheikh Nawaf, as a “great man who supported his country, caring for their affairs and exhibiting wisdom in his leadership, and contributed significantly to the Arab and Muslim nations."

The Kuwaiti television and the Royal Court announced earlier the passing away of Sheikh Nawaf.

The late emir was hospitalised following an "emergency health problem" in November.

In March 2021, he travelled to the United States for unspecified medical checks, state-run news reported.

Sheikh Nawaf was sworn in as emir following the 2020 death of his predecessor, his half-brother the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

The emir previously served as Kuwait’s interior and defence minister.

Kuwait cabinet named Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah emir of the State of Kuwait.
