A high-level Egyptian source affirmed that the negotiation track is the only viable solution to end the Israeli war on Gaza, adding that Egyptian mediation is “indispensable" to the process.

“There is no substitute for the negotiation track to address the crisis in the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian role is indispensable,” the source told Al-Qahera News on Wednesday.

The crisis, the source added, could escalate beyond all parties’ estimations if Egypt does not provide mediation.

Egypt – a key regional linchpin that mediated ceasefires between Israel and Palestinian factions during similar episodes of fighting in Gaza – is awaiting responses to a fresh initiative it proposed to end the Gaza war.

Egypt’s proposal, put forward In late December, entails a three-phase initiative to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and restore peace and stability to the region, according to a recent statement by the head of Egypt's State Information Service (SIS), Diaa Rashwan.

Rashwan added that a detailed draft of the proposal will be formulated and declared once Egypt receives the responses from the concerned parties.

Truce talks between the concerned parties have reportedly halted after Israel assassinated Hamas leader Saleh Al-Arouri and six other members of the group in Beirut, and act for which Palestinian factions have vowed retribution for.

Egypt, alongside Qatar, helped mediate a week-long ceasefire in November, in which Hamas freed over 100 captives in exchange for 240 detained Palestinian women and children.

The UN Security Council has failed more than once to call for an immediate ceasefire in the war-torn strip.

Since the beginning of its bloody war on Gaza, Israel has killed over 22,000 Palestinians, including women and children, and wounded thousands more.
