The Egyptian authorities allowed Azaiza to depart from Rafah crossing in a private car and to be transported to Arish International Airport, where he will be flown to Qatar via a Qatari aircraft that arrived this morning, the news website stated.
Earlier, Azaiza said that he had received threats from Israel, who were attempting to get him to stop covering the war, including documenting Israeli war crimes and the suffering of Palestinians.
He was also offered the opportunity to surrender and leave Gaza in exchange for a more comfortable life.
Azaiza announced his departure from Gaza in an emotional video on his Instagram account, mentioning that he had to evacuate for a lot of reasons, some of which are known to the public while others are not.
With 18.2 million followers on Instagram, Azaiza has spent the past 108 days covering Israel’s brutal war on Gaza. His coverage gained significant international recognition and he became one of the few social media voices representing Gaza.
Last Saturday, the young photojournalist, who is only 24 years old, received the TRT World Citizen Communicator Award. He dedicated the award to Palestinian journalists killed in the war.
Azaiza was also named the GQ Middle East’s Man of the Year 2023 in November.
Earlier this month, Al-Jazeera Bureau Chief in Gaza Wael Al-Dahdouh, evacuated to Qatar through the Rafah crossing to receive medical treatment after being injured.
As many as 115 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war, according to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.
