During his short visit on Wednesday, Erdogan expressed his happiness to visit Cairo’s historical landmarks.
A significant Islamic monument, Imam Al-Shafei Mosque and Shrine was inaugurated after a five-year restoration in April 2021.
Born in Gaza, Imam Al-Shafei (767-820 AD) was the founder of the eponymous Shafei school of Islamic jurisprudence, one of the four dominant schools in Sunni Islam.
Following the visit to the mosque and shrine, El-Sisi and his spouse saw their guests to Cairo International Airport.
The Egyptian presidency released a video documenting the visit, the first for Erdogan since 2012.
El-Sisi and Erdogan signed a joint declaration on Wednesday on restructuring meetings of the high-level Strategic Cooperation Council after holding talks to open a new page between the two countries.
In a press conference held at Ittihadiya Presidential Palace, El-Sisi and Erdogan called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and achieving calm in the West Bank.
During the press conference, the Turkish president said that he invited El-Sisi to visit Ankara, stating Turkey wants to increase Turkish investments in Egypt.
