In an official statement, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this meeting comes within the framework of supporting Libya's exclusive right to a political settlement and strengthening the role of Libyan institutions to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
Cairo further considered that the outcomes of this meeting are a significant step towards achieving the legitimate future aspirations of the Libyan people in a way that preserves Libya’s sovereignty, unity, security, and stability.
Early Sunday, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, met with the three Libyan leaders in Cairo to resolve the differences concerning the mechanism of carrying out the presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a joint statement, the Libyan leaders agreed to form a unified government to supervise the elections and provide the necessary services to Libyan citizens.
They further called on the UN Mission in Libya and the international community to support their proposals, hailing the Arab League's pivotal role and efforts to accelerate the electoral process in Libya.
In addition, they agreed to form a technical committee to reach an agreement on contentious issues related to the elections and to hold a second round of meetings to implement that agreement.
The leaders also emphasised Libya's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, rejecting any external interference in the Libyan political process.
Elections in Libya, initially scheduled for December 2021, have been postponed several times due to disagreements between its rival factions.
The country is now split between outgoing Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbeibeh in the west and parliament-appointed Prime Minister Osama Hammad in the east. Hammad also enjoys the support of the Libyan army commander Khalifa Haftar.
Since the uprising that led to the overthrow and killing of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been beset by years of conflict involving countless militias, jihadists, and foreign mercenaries.
