In a historic move, Norway, Ireland, and Spain made this announcement on Wednesday.

Several other nations in the European Union plan to follow suit in an attempt to implement the two-state solution.

In an official statement, Al-Azhar said such a step represents an acknowledgement of the Palestinian people's right to live freely on their land, without the oppression of an occupying force.

It also called on other nations to take the lead of the three countries and recognize the Palestinian people's legitimate rights to self-determination and independence.

The statement further called on the citizens of countries that support the Israeli occupation to pressure their governments to halt the violence and aggression that is affecting millions of innocent lives.

On Wednesday, Egypt welcomed the three European countries' step. It said the move helped progress the process of establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
