Egypt won't stay 'hands tied' amid Gaza humanitarian crisis

Egypt will not stay "hands tied" amidst the severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, a high-level Egyptian source told Al-Qahera News TV channel late Friday.

The official also asserted Egypt's steadfast commitment to countering any efforts to liquidate the Palestinian cause or isolate Gaza from the rest of the world.

Furthermore, he emphasised Cairo's dedication to the principles of the Palestinian cause and its refusal to accept the status quo imposed by the opposing side.

On Friday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and US President Joe Biden agreed to temporarily facilitate the delivery of aid and fuel to the UN at the Karm Abu Salem crossing until a legal mechanism for reopening the Rafah crossing from the Palestinian side is established.

According to the Egyptian official, this decision is based on Egypt's keenness to mitigate the effects of the aid shortage on the residents of the besieged strip.

In addition, he stressed that the Rafah crossing is an Egyptian-Palestinian crossing, noting that Egypt is planning to re-enter aid through an agreed-upon mechanism in coordination with the Palestinian Authority.

The official also highlighted Cairo's keenness to urgently find temporary solutions to supply fuel to Gaza to ensure the operation of hospitals that have ceased functioning.

El-Sisi and Biden's agreement came shortly after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel must immediately halt its military offensive and any other action in Rafah and open the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt to allow the entry of humanitarian aid.

In early May, Israel launched its assault on the southern city of Rafah on Gaza’s southern edge, taking over the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, thus preventing the entry of humanitarian aid to a population facing famine conditions.

Egypt has repeatedly called on Israel to halt its assault on Rafah and withdraw its forces from the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip.
