A high-level Egyptian source told Extra News TV channel on Wednesday that Egypt has no communication with the Israeli side concerning the alleged discovery of tunnels along the borders between Gaza and Egypt.

The source emphasized to Extra News that Israel is using these allegations to justify the continuation of the Rafah operation and to prolong the war for political purposes.

"Prolonging the war is an Israeli goal to escape from their internal political crises," added the source.

Egypt shares a 14-kilometre border with the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, another high-level Egyptian source told Al-Qahera News that "Israel continues attempts to export lies about the field conditions of its forces in Rafah to cover up its failure militarily and to get out of its political crisis."

"There is no truth to what the Israeli media reported about the existence of tunnels on the Egyptian border with the Gaza Strip, and these lies express the magnitude of the crisis facing the Israeli government," added the source.

In recent weeks, Cairo has called on Israel to end its military operation in Palestinian Rafah and open all border crossings with Gaza to humanitarian assistance to 2.3 million Palestinians in the strip who are facing famine conditions.

On Monday, Egypt condemned the deadly Israeli airstrikes on tents housing displaced civilians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah on Sunday, calling for immediate international intervention to secure a ceasefire.

Cairo also rejected the Israeli takeover of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt in early May.

Since, Cairo has refused any coordination with Tel Aviv on the Rafah border crossing, insisting on dealing only with Palestinian personnel on the Palestinian side.
